Sanjay Dubri National Park

Nestled in the Sidhi district of the state of Madhya Pradesh, Sanjay Dubri National Park is formed from the Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve & is spread over an area of 467 sq. km.

Sidhi is the nearest city to the national park. Established in 1981, Sanjay National Park once covered 1440 sq. km of area and was called as Guru Ghasidas National Park. During the time of division of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, a large part was gone in the state of Chhattisgarh in 2000. In 2010, 5 tigers were spotted in the conserved undivided area.

Sanjay National Park witnesses deciduous & dry topography and Sal Forests in peninsular and tropical moist areas. About 80% of the forest area is occupied by Sal forests and rest of the area has miscellaneous flora species. Floral species related to the main Sal forests are Salai, Mahua, Saja, Bija, Semal, Gurjan, Sisham, Bamboo and various other forests. Some of the tree species found in lower canopy are achar, aonla, Khair, Kari, Tendu and Palas.

Fauna in Sanjay National Park

Sanjay National Park is rich in wildlife species. Chinkara or Indian Gazelle and Blue Bull or Nilgai are found in abundance in the wildlife sanctuary. Sambar, Chital and Barking deer are the three kinds of deer found in abundance, along with Wild Boar.

Some of the faunal species found in large numbers are leopards, tigers, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Blue Bull, Wild Boar, Civet, Chinkara, Monitor Lizards and Porcupine. The park hosts around 309 bird species including racket-tailed drongos, golden hooded oriole, red-headed vulture, Egyptian vulture, white-rump vulture and nightjars.

You can spot some of the most sought-after animals, like panthers, tigers and wild dogs. Some of the rarely seen and shy animals are hyenas which are found here.Sloth bear, langur, and rhesus macaque are found along with Indian field mouse,porcupine, squirrel and flying squirrel. In reptiles, you can find chameleon, garden lizard, Bengal monitor, skink, etc. Common krait, cobra, scaled viper, Russell viper, rat snake and rock python are found in majority.

When it comes to avifauna, the sanctuary enjoys a wide range of birds’ species providing enormous opportunities to bird watchers. Some commonly found species are whistling teal, ibis, white-necked stork, egrets, herons, kites, harrier, eagles, partridge, vultures, lapwings, jungle fowl, quail, pigeons, sand pipers, parakeets, doves, owls, cuckoo, kingfishers, nightjars, myna, paradise fly catchers, warbles, sun birds and more.

Each & every season offers a unique experience. Winters are extremely chilly in this part & the temperature can fall upto 1°c. In summers,the temperature can shoot upto 42°c.
