Van Vihar National Park

Snuggled in the heart of capital city Bhopal, Van Vihar National Park spans over an area of 4.45 sq. km. and was announced a national park in the year 1983.

A National Park - A Rescue Centre

Despite having the status of being a national park, Van Vihar is typically managed and developed as contemporary zoological park, as per the Central Zoo Authority rules. In this 445 hectare zoo, you have a lot to see and explore. Here, forest officials have kept animals in their nearest natural habitat. A lot of animals are either exchanged from nearby zoos or orphaned from several locations in Madhya Pradesh. They didn’t capture any animal from the forest. Visitors can easily access it from the main road going through the national park. Hence, Van Vihar National Park, Bhopal is different from others. To provide natural environment to the animals, they built trenches to prevent poachers to harm animals.

History of Van Vihar National Park

Around 20 years ago, several stone diggings were happening illegally in this area and several commercial organizations were in the intention to seize this beautiful and serene location which lies on the bank of a huge lake. By considering the value of ex-situ and in-situ conservation of flora species, a legal umbrella was provided to this area as per the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. To declare it as conserved area and to fix the modalities, the forest department constituted a committee of industry experts.
In 1983, over 4.4521 sq. km of this area was declared as national park, as per the recommendation of the committee. From that parcel of land, about 3.8839 sq. km of area was declared as revenue land for the government and balance was used by the villagers of Amkheda, Dharampuri and Prempura. To own the private holdings of 0.5692 sq. km, Rs. 23.52 Lacs were given to the villagers in the form of compensation. When the Van Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary constituted, that area was covered with chain link fence and stonewall. Its natural habitat was secured and improved after using several measures within a short span of time. In the year 1980, a private land of village and degraded Shyamala Hillock was started and declared as national park in the year 1983. In 1993-94, Van Vihar started getting funds from Central Zoo Authority. Now, that mid-sized zoo has been changed into a haven of greenery. Today, Van Vihar is considered as the green lung of the city.

Captives

Carnivores like panther, tiger, lion, hyena, bear, crocodiles, snakes, gharial, python and more are kept in the enclosures by the zoo management.
As per the guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority, poultry, mutton and buffalo meat are given to all the carnivores. Fruits, milk and vegetables are given to bears for their balanced diet.

Herbivores

Sambar, Cheetal, blue bull, black buck and other free roaming animals are the center of attractions in Van Vihar. For these animals, no enclosures are added to restrict them, except outside boundaries. Several flora and fauna species are thriving in this green community because of having suitable environment for both. When grass is reduced in summer months, all herbivores are fed with wheat husk and green fodder as supplements. So, all the species are growing and are far away from being endangered.

Avifauna

The park is rich in avifauna species in its wilderness and ideal habitat. Over 200 bird species have been recorded in several areas of this national park. The migratory waterfowl frequent this park in winters and join the lush wetland of its large lake. A vulture breeding center was developed in 2010. It focuses mainly on increasing the density of population of white-backed oriental vulture,blossom-headed parakeet, Changeable hawk-eagle and Indian vulture.
